cantreadupsidedownitis

Do you suffer from cantreadupsidedownitis? Roger and I both do. We figured it out as we have been reading bed time stories to the girls. They used to like to sit on our laps to read stories, but they are too big to both sit on one lap. Then they used to just sit by us, but they can't see very well for some reason. So now we have resorted to sitting down facing the kids and reading the story to them. The really bad part is that the story is upside down to the reader. Rog and I continually laugh at the other because it sounds like they are in 3rd grade trying to read in front of the class. We likened it to the above clip from this season of Last Comic Standing.

Totally hilarious! I think the trick to solving this problem is to just memorize all the books. If you don't have all your kids' books memorized - maybe you have too many. Garage sale time!

Last Comic Standing rocks!

Good point indeed about memorizing. Our problem is one of two.. either (and I don't like to admit it) it's a book we don't read that often, or it's a library book. Avery checked out this disney princess story book and man, the stories are soooo long. The word dreaded really threw me for a loop the other night!

C'mon, first grade teachers do it all the time. Just hold the book in one hand to your side. Ok, maybe easier said than done, but still way easier than mastering the upsidedownreadalong.

Chelsea, please don't tell me you haven't mastered the art of "modifying" those long stories. Your girls are probably too old to let you blatantly skip pages, but the least you can do is drastically alter the text. Do it as much as you can before they start reading. Then when they start reading, just make sure that you include the first and last word from each page.

By the way, those modification tricks typically just work for books your kids haven't heard yet, so library books are a perfect place to start.... :)
